Beach Theme Home Decor | ||
Choosing Wall Color This is the most important part of creating the relaxing mood of the beach. Spend a good amount of time deciding on wall color to be sure that you will be happy with it for years to come. Pale blues- These blues are so much more interesting then the pastel blues of the 80's and the powder blue of the famously popular tuxedo of the 70's. Go to the paint section of your local home improvement store and you will find a wide selection of pale blue paint samples. Sandy tans- Think beyond beige. To get a feel for the true color of sand, go to your local beach or at the very least a local playground, fill a jar with sand and bring it home with you. You will notice all the different colors of light and dark tan as well as flecks of white and black. If you don't live near a sandbank, you can find small bags of sand at your local arts and crafts store. Ultra white- If you decide on white as your wall color, just make sure it is a pure white and not an offshoot of white like eggshell or antique white. Again, at your local home improvement store, take a stroll down the paint aisle and you will see gallon cans of white paint called "Ultra Pure White" -- this is the white you want. Color Combinations White walls- Paint your trim in either a pale blue or sandy colored tan. Pale blue walls- Go with white trim here. Using white against the blue will result in crisp, clean lines, giving your room a fresh look and feel. Sandy tan walls- Stick with white again here. While most love the blue/tan color combination, having the combination on your walls will visually compete with any pictures, furniture or decorations you decide to put in your room. Beach Theme Home Decor Accents Picture frames- To give your room a unified look, make all of your picture frames one color. Preferably, the same color as your trim work- It sounds boring, but it looks fabulous. You don't have to buy new picture frames, just recycle the ones that were hanging on your walls before and either brush paint the frames or buy a can of spray paint. Spray paint often works best because it adheres better. Seashells- A must have for any beach themed room. Visit your local arts and crafts store and you will discover that sea shells are sold in all shapes and sizes. Display them by using glass or clear acrylic jars and vases. Window coverings- Go with sheer curtains in either one or two of the main colors you have chosen for the room. If you choose two colors, alternate colors when you are hanging them. This will give your room a wispy, windswept feel -- especially if the windows are open and there is a light breeze. Final Tips Keep it simple- Beaches are simple and beautiful wide-open spaces. Stay along those same simple lines when decorating in a beach theme so the end result looks natural and not contrived. Just say "No" to clutter- Choose only your most favorite photographs to hang on the walls and a choice few decorative accents to pepper around the room on shelves and tables.
