Natural and architectural attractions around Veliko Tarnovo | ||
For many people Veliko Tarnovo is known as the old capital of Bulgaria with its history, architecture and entertainment. Less known, but still as attractive are also places in the vicinity near the town. Kilifarevo monastery is located about 14 km south from Veliko Tarnovo and 4km from the town of Kilifarevo. Kilifarevo monastery is an active one, it consists of a church, residential and commercial buildings. The construction of a third church there began in 1840 by Kolyo Ficheto, while the monastery "Uspenie Bogorodichno" is built in 1348 by Theodosiy Tarnovski, who later turned the monastery into a literal and intellectual centre of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Arbanassi is a village, located 4km northeast of Veliko Tarnovo and its architecture is in Renaissance style typical for the 16th and 17th century. The village was declared a cultural reserve and is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village has five churches and two active monasteries, "St. Nikolai " and "Uspenie Bogorodichno” where each year on August 15 pilgrims from all over Bulgaria come to see the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary. Nicopolis ad Istrum is an ancient Roman settlement situated 3km from the village of Nikyup on the road to Rousse and 18 km from Veliko Turnovo.Literally translated the name means "Town of victory", named after Trajan Ulpius after the victory over the Thracians. Nicopolis ad Istrum evidences of the strongest period of the Roman Empire as an important agricultural and cultural center. Dryanovo Monastery "Archangel Michael" is an active monastery. It is located 5 km southwest of Dryanovo and 17km from Gabrovo. Near the monastery is set a tourist hut "Bacho Kiro". An eco-trail leads to the Dryanovo Cave, also named Bacho Kiro. Other natural attractions are the Blue lake and the canyon of Dryanovo River. On 29 April 1876 in Dryanovo Monastery entered the group of Pop Hariton-first rebellious in Veliko Tarnovo region and Bulgaria. Surrounded by the Turks, here they lead a nine-day battle and many died. Ruined monastery was restored and in 1897 the offsprings of the rebels rosen a charnel house, which can be seen today. Hotnishki waterfall is located near the village of Hotnitsa, 15 km north of Veliko Tarnovo. The access is entirely by an asphalt road, with plenty of road signs. Hotnishki region itself is rich in archaeological remains dating from the early Neolithic. It is believed that these lands were inhabited by the first Europeans. Emen canyon is named after the village in which is located- Emmen, 20km west of Veliko Turnovo, on the the highway Sofia-Varna. To the canyon leads an eco-trail Negovanka, which is the oldest in Bulgaria.
