Seven Great Wonders Of Bulgaria | ||
Bulgaria, a wonderful Slavic land, hidden in mountains of Southern Balkan Europe where it dwells from ancient times. We decided to show you a bit about these Southern Slavs that hide amazing locations and structures from it’s long history and beautiful territory. What you will see is a list of Seven wonders of Bulgaria, and all these are locations that you would probably visit if you ever visited Bulgaria. Bulgaria is a Slavic country, but it also hides ancient Thracian history and many locations that are older than our civilization as whole. Perperikon and Tatul The ancient Thracian city of Perperikon is located in the Eastern Rhodopes, 15 km northeast of the present-day town of Kardzhali,on a 470 m high rocky hill, which is thought to have been a sacred place. Perperikon is the largest megalith ensemble in the Balkans. It is thought that the famous sanctuary and oracular shrine dedicated to Dionysus of the Bessi was situated there.His amazing structure was discovered in April 2001. The acropolis is build out of a huge stone blocks, and the wall is 3 meters thick. It’s interesting that some of the stone altars were used for sacrificing humans and animals. The megalithic monument of Tatul is 35 km. away from Kardzali. The place was used for sacrifices to the God of Sun, because of the direction of the monolith which points towards the Sun. For that reason the monument became known as the Bulgarian Stonehenge. The Rila Monastery The Rila Monastery is the largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the largest in South-Eastern Europe. It is snuggly located in the majestic venerable Rila Mountains at the elevation of 1,147 meters above sea level. For more than 10 centuries the Rila Monastery has been the center of worships dedicated to spirituality and beauty. The monastery keeps impressive pieces of Christian arts. The main church building has the biggest gold-plate iconostasis in Bulgaria, decorated with amazing woodcarvings. The monastery museum keeps the holy cross, made from a whole piece of wood by Master Raphael with one hundred and four religious sings and six hundred and fifty miniatures. Legend has it that the Master worked on the cross for 12 years and lost his eyes on it while he finished it. Veliko Tarnovo , Tzarevetz and Arbanassi Veliko Tarnovo was e center of political, economical and cultural activities for more than 2 hundred years during the Second Bulgarian kingdom form the 12th to the 14th century. The Tzarevetz castle and the Patriarchate – the two main institutions of that time were located on the mount Tzarevetz and many residential and administrative buildings were built down the hill. The Tzarevetz fortress was the main Bulgarian fortress in the second Bulgarian kingdom. At that time the slopes of the hill were covered by residential buildings, craft shops and numerous churches. Excavation works discovered more than 4 hundred residential buildings,22 churches and 4 monasteries. The old settlement of Arbanassi is situated on a high plateau with a view to the hills of Tzarevetz and Trapezitza,4 kilometers from Veliko Turnovo. It’s distinguished for its impressive houses and churches with rich interior decoration, wood-carving, and mural paintings created in XVI – XVII century. Namely these unique monuments from our architectural and arts heritage are the cause for Arbanassi to be frequently visited not only by tourists but also by scientists, archeologists, historians, architects, and artists. With a tsar decree from 1921 the settlement is declared resort, and in 2000 it is declared “historical settlement” with national significance. The Belogradchik Rocks The Belogradchik rocks are unique rock formations located in the western part of the Balkan mountain range. They covered an area that is 30 km. long and 15 km. wide. The rocks are located 1 hundred and 70 km. north-west from Sofia. There are awesome conglomerates of sandstone and limestone with reddish, gray and yellow layers. The strange rock formations came into existence as a result of impactive natural elements – rain, wind and sun, over more than 2 hundred million years. Nature transforms the shapes of rocks into sculptures of mythical creatures and people, animals and birds. Old Nessebar and old Sozopol Nessebar is located on a small island, connected to the mainland by a 4 hundred meter long neck. It is only 30 km. away from the Black sea-port of Burgas. Nessebar is also one of the oldest cities in Europe and his rich architectural monuments from the middle ages. The city is area of the old Thracian settlement of Mesamvria established in the second millennium BC. In 1956 the city acquired the states of architectural and urban reserve. It has impressive remains from an ancient fortressed wall, which gates dating from the third to the fourth century. It is also famous with rich churches from fifth and sixth centuries and from Middle Ages – from the tenth to the fourteenth century, which strikes us as a masterpiece of Bulgarian and Visantian architecture. The unique atmosphere of the city is completed by 60 houses from the Bulgarian Renaissance, grouped in several locations. The ancient part of Nessebar is a cultural monument of a UNESCO list of Worlds Cultural Heritages. Sozopol is the oldest city on the Bulgarian Black sea cost. It is located 40 km. away from Burgas. The first settlement was established at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century BC. Later Greek settlers from Asia Minor founded the city state of Apollonia. Apollonia was the biggest and richest city on the Black sea, the center of intensive trade and art. Nowadays Sozopol is one of the major tourist centers in Bulgaria. It combines ancient times and modernity. More than 2 hundred houses dating from the middle of 18th century to the beginning of the 19th, and the narrow cobble stones contribute to the romantic image of the old city. It has numerous churches, monasteries and chapels. The seven Rila Lakes The seven Rila lakes are the prettiest circ of seven lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are two thousand and five hundred meters above sea level at the North – West part of the Rila Mountains. They are close to the town Dupnica which is 65 km. away from our capital city – Sofia. The lakes are terraced. The lower part of the circ is surrounded by beautiful flower meadows with pretty mountain flowers and bushes. The higher part is surrounded by majestic rocks which stand from centuries to the lakes. The official numbering of the lakes is from top to the bottom and the names are as follows: the Tear, the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish Lake and the Lower Lake. Water in the lakes flows from one down to other and gives birth to the German river. When it is sunny and quite water in the lakes is calm and crystal-clear, but when it is stormy the lakes looked dark intimidating and turbulent. In winter they freeze and are covered with a thick layer of snow. The old Plovdiv Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The first settlement is about 8 thousand years old. The old part is separated from the rest of the city as a reserve, because of the characteristic architectural specifies of Bulgarian Renaissance houses bunched together on 3 hills – Nebetsteppe, Djambasteppe and Taximteppe. At the end of the 18th century the so called Plovdiv house style became established as a new style of urban housing. It has two major sub-styles: the asymmetric and the symmetric. The oldest asymmetric houses have artistic facades, odd-bow windows, porches opening to the house yard and vestibules with wooden colonnades on the ground floor. The symmetric style dates back to the 1830`s and typically has a representative saloon, around which there is an even number of rooms of the same size. In addition to the symmetrical plan those houses are characterized by rich Baroque decoration on the walls and traditional wood carvings on the ceilings, doors and built-in cupboards. This is the reason why the architectural phenomenon is known as Bulgarian Baroque. The ancient theater built by Marcos Aurvilius in the 2nd century is also located here.
