Research continues of Europe’s most ancient city found near the village of Younatsite
Saturday, Jul 21, 2018 | ||
When was Europe’s most ancient city, unearthed near the Younatsite village, founded? This is the riddle that a team of archeologists led by Assoc. Prof. Yavor Boyadzhiev is trying to solve. For the excavations the team relies on support from the Regional Museum of History in Pazardzhik, and to 11 volunteering students – eight from USA, two from Australia and one from Denmark. During digs in 2000, the upper layers of the mound were researched where a medieval necropolis, a stronghold from Antiquity, two settlements from the Iron Age and 17 from the Early Bronze Age were found. That is why for the time being it has been impossible to date the settlement more precisely. For the first time this year archeologists will be looking for the southern wall which is beyond the boundaries of the mound. The team will continue work until 20 August. Financing of digs has been provided by the Ministry of Culture and the Museum of History in Pazardzhik.
